Driven by the future launch of the Human Resources/Payroll Transformation Initiative (HR/P) to move HR and Payroll systems and processes from PeopleSoft to Oracle Human Capital Management (HCM), the university will concurrently introduce “Position Management.” This shift will give departments more control over defining roles, responsibilities, hierarchies, and reporting relationships, and improving the employee lifecycle, including hiring, job changes, and departures.
From “Classes” to “Categories”
The current numeric employee class codes (e.g., Class 1, Class 5) will be replaced with “assignment categories,” or names, as follows:
- Class 1: Regular Faculty; Regular Staff
- Class 2: Trades
- Class 3: Salaried Temporary Assignments
- Class 4 & 8: Temporary Part-Time
- Class 5: Student Workers
- Class 6: Graduate Workers (Teaching Assistants/Graduate Assistants)
- Class 7: Lecturers
- Class 8: Winter/Summer Instructors
- Class 9: Fellows
Current job codes will be moved to the new system, but each “job” will have a broader classification describing general responsibilities and skills of the role, such as “Account Manager.” Multiple positions can be tied to a single job.
The move to the new position management system will offer strategic benefits including:
- Position-based planning: Departments will be better able to plan staffing levels and workforce requirements more strategically.
- Clear role definition: Positions will be tied to specific roles, responsibilities, qualifications, budget lines, reporting relationships, and organizational structure.
- Streamlined recruitment and onboarding: Clear visibility of what has—and hasn’t—been filled, and easy tracking of vacancies, to help ensure the hiring process is managed more effectively.
